Behind every horse there is a world, a real “behind the scenes” made up of craft skills and techniques that are often little known. One of the most important trades is that of the farrier, who takes care of the horse’s feet.
With the start of the 127th edition of Fieracavalli, Horse Future Hub – Arts and Crafts is also taking shape. This is the new project by Veronafiere in collaboration with Orienta Verona, which transforms the Verona exhibition center into an orientation and training workshop for high school students. The program involves young people from Verona and its province in two thematic paths to discover job opportunities in the equestrian sector, told and shown by the protagonists, with a focus on craft and technical professions.
Among these protagonists is Jerry Loi Anselmo, who tells of the importance of a job that won his heart thirty years ago.
“The farrier’s job is to take care of the horses’ feet, performing fittings and trimming designed to protect the hoof, improve movement and ensure the animal’s well-being,” Jerry says.
“Every day I work with different horses: I observe their posture, evaluate the hoof, choose and prepare the right iron and then proceed with the shoeing or trimming, always trying to interpret the needs of each animal. It is a profession that requires patience, manual skills, precision and attention to detail, since the margins of error must be minimal. But the greatest satisfaction comes when I see the horse move well, serene and ready to work or compete, perhaps in the most important competitions in the sector. Being here at Horse Future Hub and Fieracavalli is an extraordinary opportunity to introduce young people to this profession, to make them understand how important it is in the daily life of the horse and to discover a world that often remains hidden. I want to show them that behind the farrier’s work there is tradition, technique and dedication, and I hope that some young people will feel inspired to take this path, just as I did 30 years ago.
Events like this are fundamental to transmit to the new generations the passion for craft and technical professions that have a fundamental future in the equestrian world.”
