Stefano was born into a rural family where animals were always faithful companions: “If I think back, now, that I was given a horse before my moped, it makes me laugh”.
This gift, however, ensure that he only built a special and indissoluble bond with his new companion but also to approach such an ancient art as farriery: “A friend of mine attended the Farriers School in Pinerolo and introduced me to this profession. It fascinated me on the spot. Even during university, where I studied veterinary medicine, I never stopped trying to learn as much as possible and travelled a great deal. It was only by seeing a variety of realities that I managed to discover different and fascinating techniques and approaches to horses.”
In 1983, Stefano finally obtained his license as a farrier: “I owe a great deal to my teacher, Maresciallo Vincenzo Blasio. He had something special, a feeling for horses that I would almost call divine. I remember once grappling with this truly indomitable horse and calling him to help me. When he arrived, a few caresses and a few whispers in his ear were enough to calm the horse.”
Today Stefano is called in by the top Italian equestrian stables and clubs, pursuing a profession rich in tradition: “Being a farrier means having solid roots and a strong orientation towards the culture and artisan approach of the trade. Traditions continue to exist but they always need to be promoted and supported. You have to be among horses, understand their needs, moving from hot iron to the coal forge and the workshop.”
For Stefano, horses must always be respected without exception, because just as they are devoted to people, people must also be devoted to their well-being, especially by helping them with a ‘good pair of shoes’: “Very powerful devices are available today but the approach to the artisan trade, which must be carried forward, is being lost somewhat. Farriers of the future, like those of the past, are the ones who share advice, experiences and work methods with colleagues. The best of modernity can only be exploited through communication, without forgetting the traditions and the art of this ancient trade.”
And there is no better place than Fieracavalli for “sharing ideas”: “It is one of the finest times of the year, where the entire horse-loving community from all over the world comes together. I remember one year when I found myself helping an English gentleman whose horse had a resin hoof and was soon due to be displayed. I managed to replace it in the “Italian way”. He was very impressed and never stopped thanking me.”
You can get to know and admire the art of farriery at first hand in Verona 9-12 November 2023.
